Shock chlorination is a violent chemical reaction. When you introduce sodium hypochlorite to your well, you’re essentially starting a war against biology. But in that war, the casualties often include the elastomers—the nitrile or EPDM rubber components—inside your pump. As a forensic plumber, I’ve pulled pumps where the seals were so brittle they crumbled like charcoal between my fingers. After the wait, you have to get that caustic sludge out of there. But here is where most people fail: they run the water through their house. Don’t. That high-chlorine water will chew through the rubber flappers in your toilets and the seals in your dishwasher. Instead, bypass your water softener and run a hose to a safe drainage area—away from your septic tank and your neighbor’s prized rose bushes.
